Peel District School Board, Islamaphobia, advocacy, activism, victim impact statement, Muslim, confidence
Mita: Right now, the Peel District School Board is involved with a pretty, pretty heavy issue involving islamophobia, and, um, our eldest has been, of course, at the forefront of what can we do. She went to the, uh, district school board community meetings um, the man who has just been arrested for hate crimes was sitting right in front of her and she has taken him on verbally at fifteen and said—and is actually—she wants to write a victim impact statement on how islamophobia affects the entire school body when certain people in her class are being targeted.
Tara: Wow.
Mita: So, she wants to be at the court case—at his court case that’s coming up in September, and she’s been following it online. And so she wants to write a victim impact statement from the perspective of the students and she says a lot of her classmates who are Muslim, they are feeling afraid and threatened so they won’t write it, so somebody has to. And she says “I’m not scared of him”.
