Teaching Gender and Sexuality at School: Letters to Teachers now available at Glad Day Bookshop

30/8/2019

Teaching Gender and Sexuality at School: Letters to Teachers is now available for purchase at Glad Day Bookshop in Toronto! We’re so excited to get it on bookshelves just in time for Back to School.

We wanted the book to be more accessible to communities of parents, teachers and youth in the Toronto area and we are actively working on getting more books available in other stores.

It can be used as a great resource for teaching and initiating conversations between parents, colleagues, friends and schools. If you happen to purchase and read the book, please share your pictures and thoughts on social media using the tag #LetterstoTeachers and let us know which letter resonated with you. You can also purchase a copy online at Routledge and Amazon

Nobody Promised You Tomorrow: Art 50 Years After Stonewall

28/8/2019

This summer, Tara had the opportunity to attend an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum entitled Nobody Promised You Tomorrow: Art 50 Years After Stonewall. This exhibition commemorated and documented  the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. The Brooklyn Museum noted that “the exhibition draws its title from the rallying words of transgender artist and activist Marsha P. Johnson, underscoring both the precariousness and the vitality of LGBTQ+ communities.”

The exhibition explored “how moments become monuments” (Brooklyn Museum) and focused on the themes of revolt, commemoration, care, and desire.

The Brooklyn Museum also provided visitors with a collection of articles for further reading, making an excellent contribution to any growing library. While Tara has already noted some readings with asterisks that are relevant to our work on the LGBTQ Families Speak Out project, we encourage you to take a look and explore these readings as they could be valuable additions to your library.

Our team really enjoyed reading artist Syrus Marcus Ware's essay on art and activism in Now Magazine.  Ware writes, "Our
artistic practice and activism cannot
be separate anymore. We must use
every form of communication as an agent
of change. This doesn’t necessarily imply aggression – sometimes we can seduce."

Ware has two theatre pieces playing
at SummerWorks this month:
ANTARCTICA @
The Theatre Centre
(1115 Queen West)
Saturday August 17, noon.
BURN, BURNED @
King Rustic and Bar
905 King West
August 14, 9 pm.
