family structure
Tara: Do you ever have people ask you questions that um, are hard to answer, or that are annoying, or do most of the people you know just accept your family for who it is?
Emily: Mostly they’re accepting. But when they do ask, I try to answer the best I can. And if it doesn’t work, I kinda just like shrug it off.
Tara: You shrug it off. What kinds of questions do people ask?
Emily: Like “How does your family work?” And they don’t mean like in a bad way. They just like want to understand.
Tara: Right, right, right, right. So those are not such bad questions to answer because they are just really wanting to know. So what do you tell them when they ask you how does your family work?
Emily: Well, like I say how it works. I say that uh, I have two moms, and I have two dads, but one of my dads isn't my family. And I say how uh, there are the three of them together, and they kind of just accept in because they know that that happens.
Tara: Great, thanks! Great. And if um somebody has a negative response, you talk about shrugging it off, right? So you just don’t let them bother you?
Emily: Mmhmm.
Tara: Great. And do you have friends who are really supportive of you in a bad moment like that?
Emily: Yeah.
