First Nations School, Two-Spirit people, Two-Spirit teachers, curriculum, Pride week, diverse library, queer, trans, identities, support
Evan: I think that at First Nations School, things are so different, because I mean because we have a cultural understanding of two-spirit people as healers and often the elders in our community and I think that that’s reflected in the curriculum. There’s lots of two-spirit people who work at the school who are very open about that. Um, there’s always talk about like pride week, and there’s definitely like diverse you know books in the library. I remember when we first took the kids there, I emailed just to be like “just so you know, we have lots of queer and trans people in our like family and community, what’s that gonna look like?” and the response back was almost like, “it’s such a non issue, like we can’t imagine it being an issue and we uphold all identities in our curriculum” And I think often, yah, there’s two-spirit people who come in from the community who lead different workshops and cultural workshops and so I think that it’s just accepted.
Tara: In a way, First Nations School is modelling the kind of work we want to see everywhere.
